WTFH Fandom Radio [Thurs, October 9th]

Well, let's see what another glorious Wednesday brought us, shall we?

*chittering*

Surely you recognise sarcasm by now. If not, that certainly explains a few things.

Anyway, notes. Up at the School, Space Pirates, Pirates in Space stepped out for a spot of brunch and took the class along. Because apparently pirates brunch. Health Education educated the class on avoiding the clap and other such diseases, while in the Library, Arden was witness to a gremlin chorus line.

Dorms continued theor quiet streak, while in Town, Prompto wondered how he was going to be an octopus about this at Furnado, Gray was having an existential waffle crisis at Over Easy, Flint and Henry were on the Beach where Henry was handling FLint's sword and commenting on the curve of it, and since I don't have anything in here about public indecency charges, we can assume this was his literal sword, not his figurative one.

Finally, over at the Devil's Nest, Octavia was philosophical about TIny's pumpkin spice obsession.

And that's everything, unless the squirrels are planning on spri-

Pick Your Poison, Thursday

There were potted flowers all around the shop today. Pam had brought them with her to cheer herself up, leaving splashes of autumn colors on shelves and by the sofa.

She, herself, bundled up on the sofa in the middle of the shop in the afternoon, a book in hand. Might as well make something of her self-enforced breaks.

Fandom Island Museum, Thursday Daytime

It wasn't the sort of holiday which required taking off. Eating home more than usual, perhaps, particularly where Steven and Llewellyn had set things up on their balcony. But for this day neither of them were going to be too strict about it.

So Steven was at work. The posters regarding autumn related displays were hung and the brochures helping to guide people were out. The tomato plant upstairs had vanished as mysteriously as it had come - still not helping Steven completely rid himself of the theory it'd been a misplaced islander.

Which left things at the museum fairly normal. Which in turn made it a good day to do inventory. As such, when not with someone Steven could be found behind the desk, tallying up all the mugs, keychains, magnets, and other souvenirs that they sold.

He hummed a happy song to himself as he did. Even mundane tasks were enjoyable when you liked your work.

The Beach, Wednesday afternoon

Flint had offered to give Henry a lesson in sword fighting when they'd been at dinner on Thursday, and in an attempt not to have missed that obligation before the next dinner happened, they'd agreed to meet here.

Flint had scrounged up a few practice cutlasses from Better Not to Ask, and was warming up his arms before Henry arrived. The porgs kept their distance as they watched.

Health Education, Wednesday, Second Period

"Okay," Don said. "Today is the day we talk about what in my day they called STDs, but I was dead for awhile and apparently now STIs is the preferred terminology. Don't ever die and then resurrect, by the way, you'll find that they've changed all the terminology on you and discontinued your favorite yogurt, and also your friends have taken sides and staged pitched battles in the middle of Manhattan. Or maybe that's just me.

"Now, the best way of avoiding STIs--and pregnancy--is to not have sex at all, but we're all adults here and I don't think any of us are monks." And what happens behind closed doors in the monasteries is the monks' business, anyway. "So let's talk about the various forms of protection and how to use them."

Don got through the handwavey lecture and banana-involving demo on how to use things like condoms and dental dams with consummate professionalism, and when he finished he asked, "Does anyone have any questions?" before adding, "If you have any questions you don't want to ask in front of the class, you can see me afterwards."

The Devil's Nest, Wednesday Evening

The attempts at getting back into the normal rhythm of life on the island continued: Octavia made it to the club for her shift on Wednesday night. And apparently the place was taking it easy on her, because nothing much seemed to be out of the ordinary.

Tiny's obsession with pumpkin spice liquors being very much counted as 'ordinary', at this point. Apparently he'd received some new pointers from Tino? Octavia really wasn't asking.

She was just keeping her currently favorite brandy away from him, just in case.

Furnado Animal Shelter; Wednesday [10/08].

Every once in a while, a more unusual animal than your usual dogs and cats and birds and gerbil came through the system, which usually meant Prompto would be spending a lot of time on the phone trying to find a better, more suitable place for that animal. This week, apparently, it was a large octopus, and he was honestly a little torn, because the huge tank they had actually wouldn't be a bad place for an octopus, but he still felt, as suitedfor dven Zora Princes as it had once been, it wasn't what was best for it.

Besides, Noctra was instantly fascinated, and he needed to figure out something before she got too attached and he wouldn't hear the end of octopuses (octopii???) for weeks.

Space Pirates! (Pirates in Space!) [Wednesday, 1st Period]

Today class was being held at Cafe Fina, because, yes, your teachers had once again finagled their expense reports to justify brunch.

"So, food," Isabela started. "Any kind of pirate has to eat, but the downside of the open seas or the wilds of space is that they tend to be somewhat lacking in places to catch a quick bite."

"And rations suck," was Aphra's very eloquent contribution. "Half the reason they last so long is no one wants to eat them."

"Which is why when pirates do make landfall, one of the first things they do with their ill gotten gains is make for the nearest place of merriment to help sate all their hungers." All of them.

Aphra gestured with her mimosa. "So we're skipping the rations and going straight to that for this class."

Fandom Radio, Wednesday 10/8

Good morning, it’s Wednesday, again and I’m here, again. Not very notes today. Yesterday must have been quiet. That’s fine. Sometimes we all need quiet.

From the school we had 3 classes, as usual. During Reclaiming Your Childhood Ghanima took her students to ride a carousel in Brooklyn. Diplomacy students were told by Anakin and Ahsoka to pick people’s pockets. I’m not sure that’s diplomatic, Anakin. I think it may just be theft.

*chittering*

I am not being hypocritical I am just saying I don’t see how it’s diplomatic. I’ve no problem with stealing when necessary. Which has nothing to do with my Other People’s Trauma class where we talked about how trauma Olympics are bad.

*chittering*

I probably did learn it from her. Or a television show. Doesn’t matter.

Nothing from the dorms. Maybe we ought to look into the porg’s trauma…
But we have a couple of notes from the town.

First, Bucky came back from somewhere and immediately went to see Jesse who seemed very pleased he’d returned.

Finally, at Caritas Kitty was trying to stop Tino from doing terrible things to drinks. Maybe he misses Summer? Steve came in and heard about the unpleasant beverages and decided on a pumpkin beer instead of anything Tino made. Very wise, Steve.

That’s all I have. Try to have a good Wednesday, everyone.

Fandom Library, Wednesday, October 8th

The gremlins were crawling around, dressed as dogs today. Normally, this would have Arden guessing that it was some kind of weird Halloween thing, or wondering if there was some kind of uber-gremlin with venom so powerful that it affected other gremlins.

But then they started moving in clear choreography and Arden finally (and regretfully) understood what was happening there. She pulled out her phone and checked a few things and--yup. DOGS had debuted on Broadway on-- October 7th. Today was the 8th. So either they had been celebrating for an entire day or someone had gotten the dates wrong and, either way, Arden wasn't going to point it out. They were being quiet and self-entertaining and, honestly, it could be worse.

They could have been celebrating Moonlight Express and acting like a bunch of trains.

Dealing With Other People's Trauma, Tuesday 10/7, 3rd period

“Have you ever found yourself,” Stark asked, looking around at the assembled students, “on purpose or not, comparing troubles? Comparing problems or traumas or issues?”

He paused only for a moment. “Don’t do that. It helps no one.”

“That’s the lesson for today. I’ve heard it said that ‘this is not the trauma Olympics.’ And everyone should keep that in mind. Everyone has experienced a different life. It’s not a competition nor should it be.”

Stark sighed. “I understand the temptation, sometimes, to try and go ‘oh but I’ve had things much worse’ or ‘at least you don’t have to…’ but it’s a bad idea. It’s just as bad an idea to go ‘well, that person has it worse than I do so I should be fine.’ As I said, it’s not a competition. And you’ll only make yourself, or others, feel worse if you try to make it one.”

“So…any thoughts on this? Do you agree? Do you disagree? Is it ever helpful to do something like say to someone, including yourself, ‘oh, other people have it worse’? Any other thoughts you might like to share?”

Reclaiming Your Childhood, Tuesday, Period 1 [10/7]

Trebor was running in circles today around Ghanima, clearly excited, as she waited for everyone to arrive at the steps of the school. "Jane's Carousel is a classic 3-row machine with 48 exquisitely carved horses and two superb chariots," she began once everyone had arrived. "It was created in 1922, the heyday of the American Carousel, by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company for the Idora Park amusement park in Youngstown, Ohio. Designated as 'PTC. No. 61,' It was carved by John Zalar and Frank Carretta, and was originally named the Idora Park Merry-Go-Round."

"The carousel has 30 "jumpers," 18 "standers," two chariots, and a Gebrüder Bruder Band Organ that provides the carousel’s music. Jane's Carousel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on February 6, 1975, the first carousel to receive such designation, although that designation would be removed in 1985, due to the park closing due to fire in 1984, and the auction of the carousel."

"The auction itself was quite interesting, by all accounts, and was described by local Mickey Rindin to Vince Guerrieri in The New Colonist: 'First, bids were taken on each individual horse. Then, when each individual horse had a sale price, bids were taken for the whole carousel. The opening bid was the sum of the price for all the horses plus ten percent, which came to $385,000. A buyer was found, and a great cry went up from the crowd because the horses would stay together. 'They didn't want it to leave one horse at a time,' Rindin said."

"The carousel was sold for $385,000 to David Walentas, a real estate developer, and Jane Walentas, a former art director for cosmetics company Estee Lauder." Ghanima smiled brightly. "I think you can see where the current name of 'Jane's Carousel' comes from, as the Walentases spent the next twenty-two years lovingly restoring the merry-go-round, the culmination of which was revealed on October 13th, 2006."

"Jane Walentas made it known that she wanted the carousel to be given a permanent place in Brooklyn Bridge Park, going so far as to pay a $500,000 fee for a pavilion to house it designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel. Opinions differed at the time on whether the master plan for Brooklyn Bridge Park State Park could accommodate the carousel, but on September 16, 2011, Jane's Carousel reopened in Brooklyn Bridge Park at 65 Water Street in Brooklyn. In October 2012, the carousel suffered minor water damage due to Hurricane Sandy, but thankfully the ride reopened a few months later."

"Next week is their nineteenth anniversary of the reveal of the restored carousel, but we'll be going to visit them today as a special treat, as they have agreed to open the carousel for us -- it is normally closed on Tuesdays." Had Ghanima slipped them an obscene amount of money? Perhaps. "You will need to stay off the large grassy lawn, they are doing some repair to it, but the rest of the park is also open to your use."

Right then, the Portalocity portal arrived next to her, and she gestured towards it. "Let's go!"

Diplomacy, Tuesday, October 7, 2025 [2nd period]

When the class arrived, the teachers were standing behind a table filled with a number of objects ranging in size from tiny flash drives to an entire watermelon.

"While diplomacy doesn't always mean spycraft," Anakin said, "sometimes information needs to be exchanged in secrecy."

"This information can vary from matters of galactic importance to...less lofty affairs," Ahsoka added. "And sometimes it's useful if people can't distinguish between them."

"So our question is, how fast are your fingers?" Anakin asked, grinning. "We're going to pick some pockets."

"Something that we're sure none of you are familiar with," Ahsoka added, producing what looked awfully like Anakin's preferred hair gel from what appeared to be thin air. Had she picked his pocket or were they pulling a fast one on the class? They'd never admit it either way.

"So there will be bonus points--" that meant nothing, "--if you can successfully hide the watermelon," Anakin said.

"Intact." In case any of them were thinking about eating it to hide it.

Hey there Fandom, it's me, ya girl Arden Finch here with yesterday's news. School had our usual round of Monday classes with Flight and Flying learning to fly helicopters over the New York skyline, Cryptozoology talking about not...deer? Okay? There are lots of animals that aren't deer. I don't get it. And How Not To Drown covered floating on your back.

No Dorms, but in Town, Vi had a bird visitor in the Magpie Emporium and I don't know if that's another person or an actual bird because this is Fandom where I have to say things like that. Ray's staff at Pizza Planet were showing him food crimes on TikTok - why would you do that to Ray? - and the Trooper Station was playing a childhood memory guessing game...aren't they all clones? Or something? Again, sentences this island makes me say. The Clinic was getting into Halloween with Stabby getting costumes, and Devil's Nest was getting into autumn in general with pumpkin spice Kahlua. Ms. Blake came back to make sure she still had a job, and confirmed they're still waiting to hear from Mr. Morningstar.

And that's it for me, so this is ya girl, Arden Finch, signing off and leaving you with Say My Name by ATEEZ
