Over Easy, Saturday

Raiden spent part of his Saturday morning explaining to the staff why they wouldn't be featuring pastry on the specials board too often. "I don't want to step on the bakery's toes. They've got their thing and they do it well. Besides, I'm not great at pastry. No one on staff is that great at pastry." It was almost like there was a great-at-pastry-shaped hole in the NPC staff that might be filled at some point in the distant future when his player got off her ass and worked through his canon until he met his soulmate who was coincidentally great at pastry. Weird.

Specials
Raspberry Oatmeal Pancakes
Nashville Hot Chicken Eggs Benedict
Catfish & Grits

"Partnering with the bakery to offer a pastry basket would be a great idea! You take point on that." See what happened when you had ideas? You got work.

Over Easy is open!

What am I--I don't do this!

*chittering*

...they've handed me a note that says "any Steve will do." That's...well, that's kind of hurtful, fellas, I have to say. I'm definitely the better looking Steve.

*dubious sounding chittering*

Right, I'm taking that as agreement anyway. This is Steve McGarrett, apparently filling in for Cap, and here's the news or something like it.

In classes, we went to Detroit for square pizza, and unlike Steve Rogers or my partner from New Jersey, I do not think that's weird or a crime against pizza. It was really good! Even the brick cheese part. Finding New Hobbies learned crochet, and Liliana continued talking about Urza and how terrible he was.

*chittering*

And the library smelled like peanut butter. Sure.

In town, bad sleep was going around, with Watts and Steven talking about Watts' insomnia and how they hoped it won't affect the party today, and Liz at the Photo Hut also dragging a bit, but Prompto was there with energy-restoring salad. Luma was trying to fix her nails at Pixie Dust after a disastrous attempt at crochet. The Devil's Nest was leaning into their random shipment of mangos, and I am learning just now I missed out on mango mojitos, and now I'm sad.

*chittering*

Oh, I also missed out on empanadas with the Supper Club, and now I'm sad and hungry. Ask Henry, Harley, Flint, Ignis, or Lydia how they were.

*chittering*

Apparently they were squirrel-approved, so I don't know if that's a pro or a con. I'll leave you to decide that yourselves. Now how does this turn off--

Plant Parenthood; Friday [08/08].

With some of the supply whittled down a little bit due to Nell doing the flowers for the party later, Eleanor decided she was going to take some time to see if she could cleverly rearrange stuff to look more full...which should have just been a few adjustments and maybe switching out a few plants, but it very quickly turned into a whole project where she found herself on the edge of wanting to rearrange the whole place and had to remind herself that it wasn't her store to do that in and she should just go make herself some tea and read about the exciting world of herbs and spices before she got too carried away.

She just hoped the store remained quiet, so she didn't end up getting worn down by social interactions before she even left the place.

Drama in the Park-a-Rama [Friday, Period One]

There was an old fashion TV and VHS player on the stage this week. How had they gotten it? How had they converted new media to the old format? All valid questions!

Don't expect any answers.

"Well, it seems the gremlin has writers block and thinks watching this as a 'family' will help?" Jane ventured.

Answers were for suckers. "Don't be surprised if the script ends up looking very familiar," Cara added dryly.

"We did bring popcorn at least!" That was Jane. Thinking ahead.

It was more than could be said for their ~visionary~ director.

Needful Things; Friday

Yeah, yeah, yeah, Harley knew about the party. She'd seen the posters around town the few times she'd actually gone outside in the past week or so. She'd even briefly considered pettily defacing at least one to say "SOME ARE WELCOME" but she hadn't happened to have a Sharpie or anything else useful on her at the time.

Anyway, she would not be attending, contain your shock. It would've been awkward enough when she had still been together with someone who would've been busy in a not-there sense the entire time, and now...

Well, now she would be finding something else to do with her evening. Harley didn't know what, yet, but it'd come to her! She was sure! And in the meantime, she was going to be in her still-empty store, trying to come up with new ideas for that. Granted, she didn't actually have any of those yet either, but they would come!! Just you watch!

But also, did you know that the classic grandma's house smell of thrifting and antiques could start feeling a lot less cozy and a lot more eugh if it was just an empty store still hanging onto it? Yeah, first things first: Harley was propping the store wide open to let some fresh air in.

Maybe it'd help her think. A gal could always hope, right?

(store still closed, post and store door open!)

Pixie Dust; Thursday [08/07].

Luma had absolutely ruined her finger nail polish by attempting to make crochet easier by using her claws in class earlier, but obviously that was fine, because she could just redo them again here at work. It worked out even better, actually, because now she could pick out something to better match what she was planning on wearing to that party this weekend.

She wasn't sure she even knew the people holding it. One of them might have been in one of her classes? She'd figure it out later. First, she needed to figure out if she wanted to do solid colors, something matte or shiny, something glittery, or maybe some nice French ti--

Library, Thursday 8/7

Why did the library smell faintly of peanut butter today? Belle didn't know. Belle wasn't going to spend too much time investigating, either. She did a quick pass through the space looking for any signs of odd gremlin activity or abandoned indoor picnics or any other obvious reason why the smell of peanut butter lingered in the air.

There was no clear cause. That had Belle feeling a bit concerned but not overly so. A smell of peanut butter was a pleasant one at least and there was a package of peanut butter cups waiting for her on the desk. It was well sealed so not the source of the mysterious scent but it was certainly appreciated.

Finding (More) New Hobbies, Thursday Period 2

“Last week was TV and snacks,” Stark said. “Easy. Just something to sit back and enjoy without having to do anything at all besides maybe press a button. Or open snacks. So today we’ll do something that requires a little more effort. Or at least a little more engagement? I don’t know. A less passive hobby for today than the one last week, anyway.”

Was he babbling a little today? Maybe. Just a bit. These things happened, sometimes. Especially if you were Stark.

“So. Creating something. So there’s something to show for your time and something to keep your hands busy. But you don’t have to make it all up. Just follow the instructions. And if it doesn’t work you just take it apart and start again. So. This is…”

Stark paused and gestured to the bag in front of him and then started pulling things out of it. Hooks. Yarn. Instruction books. Kits for beginners that included everything.

“Crochet. Something new for us to try. Unless you’ve tried it before and then it isn’t new for you but it’s still new for me. So…Come get your supplies. And there is a video we can watch that might explain things and then there are plenty of instructions and different sorts of things to try. Hats are popular. Blankets, but that involves a lot more time than we have. Tiny scarves. Maybe a blanket for the squirrels when they’ve passed out? Or little characters and creatures. Lots of things to try but at first we’ll just try to put a few stitches together. And if you can’t…that’s fine. No risk. Just something to do. To keep us occupied.”

WTFH - Fandom Radio [Thurs, August 7th]

Well, it's a thinner stack of notes this week, I'd say that's a good sing, but I've been here too long.

In School news, Jaina was in charge of non-Anakin Shenanigans, inflicting another round of Hungry Hungry Hippos on the voluntolds, though apparently this time it involved less costumes and more free for alls.

No Dorm news, yet again, while over in Town, Needful Things was closed on account of everything getting bonfired. That's why you burn the other person's things, everyone.

Elsewhere, Jaina and Jag were enduring parenthood when Jaina turned into a kitty. Octavia was behind the bar at the Devil's Nest. While at Caritas, Summer was inflicting her very worst jello upon people as a farewell. I thankfully don't have any details in my notes beyond 'Teeth, why'. Those who were unlucky enough to witness all the gory details were Atton, Rey, Stark, and Raiden.

Steven didn't mind, of course. He minded Llewellyn was having troubles, but not that Steven was losing sleep to keep him company with them. Working on a sleepless night was practically one of Steven's specialties after all.

Fortunately there wasn't anything requiring too much concentration at the Museum today. Steven kept cups of tea handy as he got through his regular work. He could go without sleep, but caffeine helped.

The Devil's Nest, Thursday Evening

There was a crate of mangoes sitting on the bar when Thor walked into the Devil's Nest tonight, and he shrugged and went with it, looking up mango-based drink recipes for the specials board.

Tiny was also trying to go with it, but mangoes were unfortunately not a shape that worked well for construction, especially when Thor wouldn't let him use cocktail picks to secure them. They kept falling off the counter and rolling off places, leaving Tiny to chase after them. It was good exercise.

"I can't even tell what he's trying to build," Thor confided to Don after Tiny had been at it for a while with little to no progress.

The Wonderful World of Pizza, Thursday, Period 3

"Today we're going to continue causing physical pain to the New Yorker in our midst continue our exploration of the regional pizzas of the United States, because there really are so many great options to choose from. Except Rhode Island. I'm not sure what went wrong in Rhode Island." The less said about Rhode Island-style pizza, the better. "Detroit-style pizza has been having kind of a moment over the last few years, so I thought we should include it in our study.

"Now, it's Detroit, Motor City, so of course their pizza has ties to the auto industry: the reason their pizzas are rectangular, instead of the classic round shape, is that they were originally baked in trays meant to be used as automotive drip pans, or to hold small parts in the car factories. Pretty neat, huh? I'm sure they cleaned them first. It has a thick, crispy, chewy crust, and the cheese goes from edge to edge with no exposed crust, which results in a beautiful layer of frico where the cheese touches the pan. These are the two real hallmarks of a Detroit-style pizza, but there are two more twists that are sometimes in play: Wisconsin brick cheese is sometimes used instead of mozzarella, and sometimes the pepperoni is placed directly on the crust, instead of on top of the sauce and cheese. In fact, some pizzas are completely reversed, with the sauce going on top of the cheese in what's known as a 'red top.' Why? Why not?

"Detroit-style pizza was invented in 1946 at Buddy's Rendezvous in Detroit, later renamed to Buddy's Pizza, and they're still slinging pies today! In fact, they've expanded into a whole chain, but we're going to the original location at the corner of Eight Mile Road and Conant Street. So let's head through our portal and go get some pizza!"

Aside from all the intergalactic political intrigue and maybe torturing a spouse via public games, life in the house was very normal. Like the argument Jaina was having over whether or not Daniel had to go to bed.

"I'm eight years old, I'm practically grown up!" he said, in complete seriousness.

"And I'm much older than eight so I win," Jaina shrugged.

"I shouldn't have to take this," he said. "I'm a prince."

"Don't care," she said.

"Daniel," Jag said from his spot on the sofa.

Daniel made a frustrated noise, but stomped off to his room without another word.

She made an annoyed face not at Jag, but in his general direction. "It's annoying that you could do that.

Fandom Radio, Wednesday 8/6

Good morning, it’s Wednesday, I’m me-shaped and so I’ll read the news the squirrels have written down from yesterday. Starting with the school as always.

(Even More) American National Park Tours with Sam Eagle ventured to a place called the Dry Tortugas which is actually almost entirely water. All right. Beach! watched a movie about sharks in a wave pool. And Paintball! had balloons full of paint instead of guns full of paint and Thor won.

Nothing in the dorms, sorry Porg, so we’ll go right into how Thor celebrated his victory with a bear claw and coffee at the Perk while I chose to soothe my sorrows with a very sugary coffee and we chatted a bit.

Earlier in the day, Marc was in his office at the boarding house. Remy brought him beer from home. Remy’s home, not Marc’s. And they talked about Harley and Marc says everything that happened was due to him and nothing to do with her. Marc. It doesn’t matter how many times you say that or think it the other person will be wondering what they did wrong. I’m sorry Harley.

Remy also went to work at Needful Things though I’m still unsure if he actually works there or not. The shop was still mostly empty after the bonfire.

Nell was at her shop working on flowers for the party for Watts and Steven. I’m sure they will be lovely.

And at Pick Your Poison Pam was working on something and Watts stopped in and had tea and a conversation about Marc and Harley.

That seems to be everything from yesterday, I think. Anakin is a cat, again, I think, so the park may be safe this morning. May be. I imagine I’ll be here again next week.

Summer Shenanigans- The park, Wednesday afternoon

Any rain in the forecast seemed to be holding off while the events in the park were happening, which was lucky! The last thing anyone wanted was to do this in the rain. Not because it would make the event harder but because people might not come out and watch.

It was Jaina starting things off again, bullhorn in hand not because she needed it but because she liked it.

She was standing in the middle of a large tape circle, where several differently colored bins were situated in evenly spaced spots at the edge. Above Jaina was a good number of soccer balls, hanging in the air, levitated by the Force. It wasn't her showing off but there was really no easy way to hang things from air, you know?

"No teams today, guys!" she announced through the bullhorn. "It's going to be simple: the balls will drop, and you have to collect as many as you can and put them in your bin until there are no balls left. You can't use powers and you can't take anything from someone else's bin. if a ball goes out of bounds, it's not in play anymore. It's every person for themselves for three rounds."

And she read out this week's names.

Needful Things; Wednesday

Remy's "CLOSED FOR RENOVATIONS" sign was still in the window of Needful Things. And the inside of the store remained barren, shelves empty and the checkout counter standing useless in the middle of it.

And Harley was sitting on the floor, eating a cake she'd ordered in. So, whatever stage of the breakup that was, she was pretty firmly at it, one sugar overloaded scoop of a spoon at a time. The high of the bonfire had carried her for a few days, but when she'd crashed, she'd done so hard.

And now that that had evened out, at least a little... Yeah, cake it was. While she looked around her store, and heaved a big sigh that was far from her first of the day.

"Jeez, how'm I gonna fill ya back up with junk, huh?"

And did she even really want to?

She drowned that thought out by shoveling yet more cake in her mouth.

(store closed, post open)
